The very first bedding can be considered skins of wild animals. Further, for such purposes, wool, straw and cotton were used. The disadvantage of these materials was that due to poor handling, they caused allergies and irritation.
According to historians, for the first time, cuts of woolen and cloth fabrics as bedding were used by the ancient Romans in the 1-3 centuries A.D. It is also worth noting that already in those days the materials were decorated with peaches and roses, which were considered a symbol of love joy.
In Europe, bed linen began to be used only in the 13th century, which coincided with the beginning of the Renaissance. However, such pleasure was available only to a wealthy estate. Bed linens of those times were equated with a work of art and were made exclusively by hand. Its color was white, and of the ornaments were lace or plain monograms. In the Baroque and Rocco era, decor became more complicated and patterns frivolous. The very first noble lady who contributed to the popularization of bedding was the Marquise de Pompadour. Until the 18th century, buying bedding was considered not just a luxury, but also an indicator of social status.
Cotton and linen bed linen were brought into the Russian Empire by Peter I. By his order, Flemish nuns were invited to the Novodevichy Convent to teach girls living at the monasteries how to weave Brabant lace. A few years later, cambric, lace and muslin products were already woven throughout the empire, and the linen was so beautiful and popular that it became a worthy decoration of English and Turkish bedrooms. The most famous in the 18th century was the manufacture of the landowner Protasova. In wealthy families, it was decided to store more than a dozen sets of bedding "in reserve" in the house. He was handed down as a dowry.
But did you know ... In the old days at least 3 sheets were included in bedding sets. The first lay thin - for the safety of feather-beds, the second - canvas, the third - embroidered linen. In the elite sets there was also a fourth sheet - a thin lace - it was used as a bedspread. The set also included at least 3 pillows in patterned pillowcases from which a peculiar slide formed on the bed.
After the Second World War, the production of textile products was placed to the conveyor. One of the main achievements of light industry was the invention of comfortable duvet covers. In the 20th century, pastel linens were popular, and since the 60s - bright and colorful.
Today it is difficult to surprise with elegant designs. The time has sunk into oblivion when people were not interested in where, on what and under what they sleep. Simply put, it has become important for us how we spend a significant part of our time and life, namely, we sleep.
